Two awards were announced at the recent Finnish national science fiction convention (Finncon).
The Tähtifantasia Award (given by the Helsinki Science Fiction Society for fantasy translated into Finnish) went to Kafka rannalla (Kafka on the Shore) by Haruki Murakami.

This year’s Tähtivaeltaja Award (for science fiction published in Finnish) was given to Vellum by Hal Duncan (published in Finland by Like). This year’s jury was comprised of critic Hannu Blommila, editor Toni Jerrman, critic Elli Leppä, and journalist Vesa Sisättö. Tero Ykspetäjä reports on the announcement.

The Helsinki Science Fiction Society has announced the finalists for this year’s Tähtivaeltaja Award, which is for science fiction (original Finnish or translated). As is so often the case with awards for translated literature, the field is fascinating:

This year’s Tähtifantasia for fantasy works translated into Finnish has been won by Ellen Kushner’s Thomas Riiminiekka (Thomas the Rhymer). The book was translated by Johanna Vainikainen-Uusitalo and published by Vaskikirjat. The folks at the Helsinki Science Fiction Society have been busy again. Tero has the full list of nominees for the Tähtivaeltaja (their science fiction award). There are three translated works and two originally in Finnish. Nice to see Finland getting a dose of Howard Waldrop.
