Endgame was published in October of 2007. I like it a lot, but I’m puzzled about it’s eligibility. How does the PKD work exactly?

I can’t say for certain, Susan, but I suspect what happens is this. The jury has to produce a verdict fairly quickly at the end of the year in order to get a nominee list out in January. Consequently books published late in the year may not get considered. The jury for the following year is empowered to pick up books that they know the “correct” year failed to consider. I’m pretty sure that the Tiptree works that way, and I know the Crawford does (though it is a little easier for us as we are mostly the same committee each year).

Endgame, by Kristine Smith, has just been replaced for the PKD with Plague War, by Jeff Carlson. That’s got to be embarrassing.
