Science Fiction Awards Watch

Via Tero we learn that the Helsinki Science Fiction Society has announced the nominees for this year’s Tähtifantasia Award (for fantasy translated into Finnish). They are as follows:

  • Thomas Riiminiekka (Thomas the Rhymer), Ellen Kushner (Vaskikirjat)
  • Noita (Wicked), Gregory Maguire (Sammakko)
  • Basiliskin laulu (A Song for the Basilisk), Patricia McKillip (Karisto)
  • Oikukas kuolema (As Intermitências da Morte), José Saramago (Tammi)
  • Kuningas Gilgameš (Gilgamesh the King), Robert Silverberg (Vaskikirjat)

That’s quite a line-up of genre stars: Ellen Kushner, Gregory Maguire, Patricia McKillip and Robert Silverberg. Also José Saramago, who is Portuguese, and has a Nobel Prize for Literature so he can probably write a bit. As Intermitências da Morte is available in English as Death with Interruptions. From the reviews it sounds a bit like a Terry Pratchett novel.
