Other Worldcon Awards
August 28th, 2007 by Editors
Most of the attention on Saturday is going to be on the Hugo Award results but, as Worldcon regulars know, the Hugo ceremony is home to a number of other awards:
- The First Fandom Hall of Fame Award acknowledges the life-long enthusiasm of one of the self-styles dinosaurs of fandom;
- The Big Heart Award is another fan award given for service to the community;
- And the Nippon 2007 committee may choose to give out a Special Award or two.
With the Worldcon being in Japan, you may be wondering about Japanese awards. We have identified two:
- The Komatsu Sakyo Award is for promising new talent; and
- The Nihon SF Taisho Award is given by the Japanese equivalent of SFWA.
Other Japanese awards are mentioned on the Nippon 2007 web site.
One set of awards that will be missing from the Hugo ceremony is the Seiuns. That, of course, is because they are getting their very own ceremony, in which the full list of Seiuns will be presented. More on that tomorrow.

Has Science Fiction Awards Watch taken an editorial stance against accepting the full name of the Big Heart Award, or did you overlook it?
You probably saw the announcement in person, but anyway, it’s documented here:

Mike: Neither, just confused. We’ve seen the award named in different ways, and other events at the L.A.Con IV Hugo ceremony rather overshadowed that particular announcement. Is the discussion that Evelyn mentions ongoing, or is it now official that the award is named after Forry?
Well, if there’s any doubt it will be resolved as soon as the next winner is announced.
I was disgusted but not surprised at the renaming. Imagine how famous Kyle and Ackerman would have made themselves if they’d had the help of the innernet!
Mike: I shall wait to hear from Our Man in Yokohama to see how it is announced. I note that our page on the Big Heart does link to the article in Mimosa in which Forry explains the origins of the award.
I just noticed that the September 2007 issue of Locus says (on page 8) that the First Fandom Hall of Fame Award was presented at NASFiC this year — to Algis Budrys. I attended the NASFiC and covered it for the NASFA Shuttle but somehow missed that announcement. If it appeared in their at-con newsletter it escaped my notice. I didn’t attend the banquet/awards ceremony so I’m guessing it was announced there.
Um… that earlier comment should say “page 8″ — apparently an “8″ followed by a “)” is rendered (at least on my computer) as a “smiley” gif.
