Hugo Discussion Begins
September 1st, 2007 by Editors
We are very much hoping that the good folks at Fast Forward have video of the Hugo Award ceremony. Apparently Best Dramatic Presentation: Short Form was presented by Ultraman himself, with the help of George Takei and a small robot. Kevin says it was very funny.
Donato Giancola has set the ball rolling on Hugo controversies already. In his acceptance speech (read for him, he wasn’t there) he said he would be declining nomination for next year and he called upon all past winners to decline nomination as well so that some new blood could win.
Frank WU is deliriously happy.
There isn’t a lot of comment out there as yet (most of the USA is still waking up, after all), but the one theme that is coming through strongly is that everyone loves the trophy.

Gotta love that trophy!
I was just sitting here listening to NPR’s Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, feeling sorry for myself about not being able to attend Nippon 2007 when I decided to Google the Hugo Results and was amazed to see them posted…
Needless to say I’m incredibly pleased with the results (especially in the categories I was personally involved with!) and quite =eager to see what the Nippon 2007 design is.
Congratulations to all the winners and on to Denver next year!

Well, I’m all for Donato Giancola’s well made point: Hugo voters (and other awards voters as well) tend to vote for what they are familiar with, and not paying attaention to newcomers. Just as Neil Gaiman declined last years nomination in the best novel category, I belive it’s the right thing to do for people who won the Hugo for a few times. In any category. But, it should be left out for the nominees to decide.
