Ignatz Awards Shortlists

Via Joe Gordon we discover that the short lists for the Ignatz Awards shortlists have been announced. You can find them at Comics Reporter. There are a couple of things worth noting.

Firstly, our heroic Moomins are up for an award again. This time they are in the Anthology or Collection category. Here’s hoping.

And secondly there is something very interesting about the way the Ignatz Awards work. The Comics Reporter blogger commented that it seemed untoward for a work by one of the jury to appear on the shortlists (Sara Edward-Corbett’s The Monkey and the Crab in Best Mini-Comic). The awards’ coordinator responded to explain that during nominations the Ignatz jury members work entirely blind. None of them knows who else is on the jury when they submit their nominations. Obviously jurors are not allowed to nominate their own work, but if the rest of the jury nominate them then they can be included. There is no problem with the final ballot because that is voted on by the members of the Bethesda Small Press Expo (SPX). It is an interesting system, though probably prone to misunderstanding by people who don’t pay a lot of attention to award processes. Full details of the Ignatz rules are available here.

SPX takes place over October 12/13. Hopefully we’ll have the Ignatz winners for you on the 14th.
