Science Fiction Awards Watch

The International Horror Guild Awards were presented this evening at World Fantasy Con. Paula Guran introduced the ceremony, and then handed over to John Picacio who was in a hurry to get back to the bar and promised a swift ceremony. We shall be as swift. The winners are:

  • Artwork: A tie – Exhibits from the Imaginary Museum, Aeron Alfrey (www.ligotti.net/gallery/alfrey.html); and Cover Story: The Art of John Picacio, John Picacio (MonkeyBrain)
  • Illustrated Narrative: A.L.I.E.E.N., Lewis Trondheim (France: Editions Breal, 2004; US: Firstsecond Books, 2006)
  • Non-Fiction: Icons of Horror and the Supernatural S.T. Joshi (ed.) (Greenwood Press)
  • Periodical: Subterranean, Bill Schafer (ed.)
  • Anthology: Lords of the Razor, William Sheehan and Bill Schafer (eds.) (Subterranean Press)
  • Collection: A tie – Basic Black, Terry Dowling (CD Publications); and American Morons, Glen Hirshberg (Earthling)
  • Short Fiction: “The Box”, Stephen Gallagher (Retro-Pulp Tales)
  • Mid-Length Fiction: “The Old North Road”, Paul Finch (Alone on the Darkside)
  • Long Fiction: Dark Harvest, “Norman Partridge” (CD Publications)
  • Novel: The Unblemished, Conrad Williams (Earthling)

28 minutes for the awards. Someone ask Mr. Picacio to present the Hugos.

Two other items. Firstly, Jo Fletcher came to present the Living Legend Award to Ramsey Campbell (this having been announced some time ago). Thoroughly rousing she was too. And Ramsey was hilarious.

Also, a quick plug for the The Mirabundus Project. This is the Non-Profit organizarion that runs the IHG awards. Go ye there and donate, please.

And now, off to the Australian Party to celebrate on behalf of (the sadly absent) Mr. Dowling.

That would have been live, except that there was no wi-fi signal in the conference room. Here’s hoping for better luck on Sunday.

Wish I could have been there. I’m delighted to win Best Novel. It’s an honour and a privilege. Thanks to Paul Miller and everyone who supported the book over the past year.

Terry, Conrad – delighted to hear from you. Hopefully we helped make your day. And congratulations!

Terry, this was particularly well timed given all of the promotion for Australian writers that has been going on over the past few days. It was a very happy Aussie party last night.
