The World Fantasy Awards, 2007

Many thanks to the judges: Gavin Grant, Ed Greenwood, Jeremy Lassen, Jeff Mariotte, and Carsten Polzin. They all worked very hard to determine the winners, but Jo Fletcher is remind all of the attendees that they can nominate. “Vote Early, Vote Often”, she says.

Special Award, Non-Professional: Gary K Wolfe (for reviews and criticism in Locus and elsewhere).

Special Award, Professional: Ellen Asher (for work at SFBC).

Best Artist: Shaun Tan.

Best Collection: Map of Dreams, M. Rickert (Golden Gryphon).

Best Anthology: Salon Fantastique, Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling, eds. (Thunder’s Mouth).

Best Short Fiction: “Journey Into the Kingdom”, M. Rickert (F&SF 5/06).

Best Novella: “Botch Town”, Jeffrey Ford (The Empire of Ice Cream, Golden Gryphon).

Best Novel: Soldier of Sidon, Gene Wolfe (Tor).

I try to resist the temptation to say, “It’s the Wolfe! It’s the Wolfe!”. But I fail dismally.

Betty Ballantine and Diana Wynne Jones received lifetime achievement awards, which were announced before the convention. Rapturous applause for Betty’s speech. Diana, sadly, is not well enough to travel, but she has sent Sharyn November with a long speech full of rousing Feminist messages.

The Emerald City Best Dressed Award (yes, I still do them) goes to Deanna Hoak. Fashion photo to follow.

Ladies and Gentlemen, that concludes our live coverage of the 2007 World Fantasy Awards.

Congratulations certainly are in order for the winners. I am glad that I decided to read as many of the finalists as I could before the awards were announced and I cannot fault the judges for how they voted. Very deserving winners, each and every one of them.

And thanks for doing the live report, Cheryl – much appreciated here!

Thirding the thanks for the reports, Cheryl. Very much appreciated by the wanted-to-be-theres. Fun to read it ‘nearly live’. Bravo and well-done.

    Hey, where’s the fashion photo?

Thank you for reminding me, Marilee. I’m half way through processing my WFC photos. Unfortunately life is kind of busy right now. This evening Kevin and I have a game show to run (in which I get to play the part of the Goddess Eris), and tomorrow I shall be stuck on aircraft. Monday is all day at a training course. And so on. Hopefully very soon.
