[...] That’s an element that Richard carried on with his two Black Widow mini-series for Marvel Comics (hopefully he will return to comics work at some point, he has said he would like to when his novel-writing schedule permits). His work is that rare beast – interesting, thought-provoking material mixed with thrilling action and great characters. Which also makes his novels perfect material for generating good discussion in book groups, as I know – the very first novel the Edinburgh SF Book Group I set up ever discussed was Richard’s debut Altered Carbon (I was very pleased when some of the female members of the group said they had seen the book and thought it was ‘for boys’ and would never have read it if not for the group, but found they loved it and wanted more). I’m thinking now when its next my time to choose a book for the group I may have to steer us to Black Man. And for those of you who still haven’t picked up on one of the best new voices in British science fiction (and soon fantasy too!) then what are you waiting for? I read a lot of books and comics each month and I can say that Richard is one of an elite few writers who I will drop everything else to read when his new book crosses my desk – I can’t really praise his books more highly than that.
