Nomination and Final ballot stages. Nominations are open to anyone. The final ballot is by members of SFFANZ and to members of the current year’s New Zealand National Science Fiction Convention.

Nominees must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. Works may be published anywhere in the world.

Note that “science fiction” is interpreted broadly to include fantasy and horror.


  • Novel (>40,000 words)
  • Novella or Novelette (7,500 – 40,000 words)
  • Short Story (< 7,500 words)
  • Collected Work (includes anthologies, magazines, web sites, etc.)
  • Artwork
  • Dramatic Presentation: Long Form
  • Dramatic Presentation: Short Form
  • Fan Writing
  • Fan Artist
  • Fanzine
  • Fan Publication (any paper publication that is not a fanzine)
  • Fan Production
  • New Talent
  • Services to Fandom
  • Services to Science Fiction

The award rules note that not all categories may be used every year.
