Saturn Awards

Presented by

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films

Nominees in the film categories are selected by “Area Committee” – specialist juries, one per award, which are intended to be split equally between professionals, academics and fans (available volunteers permitting). The winners in the four major categories (science fiction, fantasy, horror and action) are chosen by popular vote of the Academy membership. Winners in the other categories are chosen by the Area Committees.

Separate Television and DVD Committees are established to pick the nominees in those category groups. The committees also choose the winners.

Final ballots are independently audited.

Films are only eligible if they are shown at one of the Academy’s screenings, which take place in the Los Angeles area. In the TV and DVD categories there is no such restriction.

The Awards’ web site notes that for films the eligibility year may not be exactly coincident with the calendar year. It is not clear why, but it may happen if a major film is released close to the year end and and cannot be shown in time.
