Method

The prize is sponsored by The Kraken Rum and administered by Anne Perry and Jared Shurin

Works are nominated by their publishers and, in the case of self-published books, their authors.
The finalists (5 in each category) and winners are selected by juried panels appointed each year by the administrators.

The Kitschies shortlists are selected in January and the winners announced in February. The 2011 Kitschies will be announced at the SFX Weekender on 3 February, 2012.

Eligibility

For all categories, the book’s first UK publication must have taken place during the calendar year.

The award is given to those books which best elevate the tone of genre literature. The judging criteria are “progressive, intelligent and entertaining” and all submissions must contain elements of the speculative or fantastic.

Categories

Red Tentacle: best novel
Golden Tentacle: best debut (must be author’s first novel-length fiction)
Inky Tentacle: cover art
Black Tentacle: discretionary (and irregular)

Winner receives

Winners in all categories receive a Tentacle trophy and a bottle of The Kraken Rum. Red Tentacle winners also receive a cash prize of £750. Golden and Inky Tentacle winners receive £250 each.
Finalists all receive a bottle of The Kraken Rum.
