Cons That Present Awards

Not all awards are presented at conventions and not all conventions present awards, but there are more than enough to justify making special note of them.

Presented here are the events – conventions, conclaves, festivals, ceremonies, gatherings, meetings and conferences – that have become the presenting events for many of the awards.

Most conventions are scheduled on an on-going annual basis and their dates may vary, nor is a given convention necessarily always scheduled for the same location every year. Therefore, the list below will require a bit of hunting on the reader’s part to obtain the specifics of date and location. With that being said, here are the awards. Three tables are provided. In sequential order they are: Alphabetical by Award name, Alphabetical by Convention name and Calendric (in order by date).

The Canadian National SF Convention is actually a rider convention that is held as part of a regular SF convention in Canada, so it can be held at any time of the year. In 2011, it was held in November as part of SFContario 3 here in Toronto. In 2012, it will be held August 10-12 as part of When Words Collide 2012 in Calgary, Alberta.

You may consider adding the Phoenix & Rebel Awards from DeepSouthCon. DSC — http://www.deepsouthcon.org — is a bidded con that is often, but not always, held in conjunction with an existing annual con. ((The year happens to be an exception as Huntsville AL is hosting DSC 50 — http://www.dsc50huntsville.com — as a standalone.))

The Rebel (fan) & Phoenix (pro) are essentially lifetime service awards, often described as for the fan/pro “who has done the most for Southern Fandom.”

There’s a companion award, the Ruble, which is *not* an official DSC award but is presented annually at DSC. It’s often described as for the person “who has done the most TO Southern Fandom.” ((It’s not clear to me if the loose conglomeration of fans that administer the Ruble consider it a lifetime award or not.))

Sfawardswatch has occasionally covered these in the past.

I think you’ll find that ESFS Awards at Eurocons are at various times of the year depending on when Eurocon is held. Eurocon is held in summer in more northern European venues, mainly in the spring elsewhere, but (for example) did clash with the pre-Worldcon Au Contraire in 2010 in August due to lack of ESFS viligance. So probably best to cite it as variable month.

The Big and Little Zilant Awards are presented at the International Festival of Fantasy in Kazan each November (usually a few thousand attend so it is not a trivial event).

The Bronze Snails are awarded at Interpresscon in St Peterburg (one of the few awards actually personally presented by a major SF author).

Romania has variable awards at Atlantykron, Capidava, Romania in July – August most years for past 25 years.

The Kurt (or Curt) Sidiomak Awards and Kurd Laßwitz Prizes are given in Germany annually.

That’s enough for now to keep you going.

Our SF Awards listing is three times a year. Click on the ‘Headlines’ link here

Thank you (for the extra work, lol). Seriously, that is very interesting and a lot of adds for the site.

First, do you suppose you could provide a name for me to address? Second would you be able to provide me with the requisite information for the awards you listed for the information pages – or provide me with contact info for those who can?

    Thanks again Concatenation Info Person!

Requested info on the DSC awards sent to the editors under separate cover.

    Hi there

The Ditmars are presented annually at the Australian Natcon, which is attached to whichever state-run convention bids for it in a given year, so should only be attributed to Natcon (not Natcon/Swancon). In 2009 it was Conjecture (SA), 2010 it was Dudcon (at Aussiecon, VIC), 2011 is was Swancon (WA), in 2012 it is Continuum (VIC) and in 2013 it is Conflux (ACT). It has also been Thylacon (TAS) and Conjure (QLD) and Convergence (VIC) prior to that. These conventions are held at various times throughout the year, so can’t be pinned to a date, sorry!

However, Swancon does have the Tin Ducks (awards for Western Australian works, con generally held at Easter). Another addition is Continuum, which has the Chronos Awards (for Victorian works, con usually in June but has been at various times).

The Seiun Award is a Japanese award that was presented at the World Science Fiction Convention the year that that convention was held in Japan. It is regularly presented at the Japanese national science fiction convention Nihon SF Taikai.

  8. on 20 Apr 2012 at 7:42 pmThomas Bull

I wish to retract my last comment.

The Seiun Award is nowadays presented at the World Science Fiction Convention, although it used to only be presented at the Japanese national science fiction convention.

    Thomas:

You are slightly off base. The Seiuns are the Japanese National SF Awards. They are presented at the Japanese National SF Convention. Sometimes, they re-present one or two of the awards (for best Translated work) at the Worldcon as well, but their “home” is the Japanese NatCon.
