Method
Short lists are compiled from recommendations submitted by BSFA members. These are voted upon by the BSFA membership and by members of the British National Science Fiction Convention (Eastercon). A preferential ballot is used for the final voting.

The awards used to have a non-fiction category, but this proved problematical and has currently been replaced by a reading list assembled from recommendations.
