Shaun Tan’s “The Arrival” has just been published in the US. I’m not sure whether it will be eligible for next year’s Hugos, as it was first published last year in Australia. (I nominated it this past year in the “Best Related Book” category, as did one other person.) It’s stunning and delightful, and now reasonably inexpensive in the US. Clearly, from the overwhelming 2-vote nominating activity, not very many people have seen it. It’s the story of an immigrant in a fantasy world, and it’s told entirely in pictures. Clarification on the eligibility issue would be welcome, but mostly I hope more people have the opportunity to see and enjoy it.

Oh yes! I’d seen Jonathan Strahan enthusing about it (he may have been the other nominator), but I didn’t actually get to see the book until about a month ago when I discovered that Judith Clute had a copy. It is absolutely gorgeous, and seriously weird.

The eligibility extension motion passed in Yokohama, so if what you say about the publication is correct then it is indeed eligible next year. It is going straight onto my list. I wonder if I can find enough people for a discussion panel…

The publication date given (by Locus–buried in the forthcoming list in the September edition–and on Amazon) is October 1, 2007 for the US edition, but to my delight and surprise it is already in stock on Amazon. I ordered a copy for my brother-in-law for $13.59 that arrived the very next day. When I went in search of a copy for my husband’s Christmas present last year, I paid about $32 to a British bookseller and waited for two months! (Shipping from Australia directly would have increased the price to around $60 US.) I would still vote it well worth the money and the wait.

It would make a great topic for a discussion panel, as immigration is (again, or perenially) a current issue. It’s won a short story award and a younger reader’s award in Australia. I don’t necessarily see it as “children’s.” Strikes me as a picturebook for adults. And it is seriously weird, and wonderful. Hope you find enough people!
